  • Sustainable Urban Development: Learn how to prepare plans and regulations, and manage neighborhoods, localities, towns, cities, and metropolitan areas, including efforts to devise environmental, social, and economic linkages to ensure sustainable urban development.

Urban and regional issues evolve and change over time. The M.Plan program’s distinctive combination of planning, design, management, finance, economics, social science, technology, and policy equips you with the knowledge and skills you need to address them.

Semester Breakdown

Semester 1

The first semester instills knowledge of the fundamentals of planning, such as planning theory, planning techniques, environment, infrastructure, transportation, housing, and socio-economic aspects. The planning design studio focuses on spatial planning and area appreciation while fostering the skills needed for effective group collaboration.

Semester 2

The second semester gives an in-depth knowledge of the subject areas while attempting to inculcate significant urban and regional planning competencies. It also provides a choice of professional electives and open electives from which students are required to pick one from each. The studio primarily focuses on the analysis and preparation of development plans.

Furthermore, the summer internship that follows the end of the semester provides students with the necessary practical experience and expertise.

Semester 3

The third semester offers advanced-level theoretical courses and builds an aptitude for research and critical thinking among students. The studio concentrates on regional planning with a thorough understanding of its context, relationships, relevant legislation, and hierarchy.

Semester 4

During the final semester, students have to undertake their thesis with an emphasis on applied research. Furthermore, they will study the advanced level of the electives chosen previously to develop specialized proficiency in them.

Our leader

Prof. Saurabh Jindal, Program Director, M.Plan

A passionate architect-urban planner, Prof. Saurabh Jindal has done B.Arch from DCRUST Murthal and M.U.R.P. (Urban and Rural Planning) from IIT, Roorkee, and is currently pursuing his Ph.D. from the same institution. With an extensive experience of over six years in academics and five years in the industry, Prof. Saurabh gained research interests in Sustainable Development, Resilience, Land Policy, and System Dynamics. He believes in the research-oriented and practical application of theoretical concepts.

Before associating with NICMAR, Prof. Saurabh performed the role of Assistant Director (Planning) for Delhi Development Authority. He has also worked with several private architectural and urban planning consulting organizations. Prof. Saurabh has contributed to the development of Delhi city and numerous towns by developing master plans, land-use plans, layout plans, and land development policies.
