March 2026, Volume 4, No. 3

The School of Construction in NICMAR University Pune, which hosts some of the most acknowledged and popular programmes like MBA in Advanced Construction Management (ACM) and Postgraduate Diploma in Quantity Surveying and Contracts Management (PDGQSCM), has been striving constantly, for the last 4 decades to remain at the forefront in imparting advanced education in construction management. The school is devoted to provide its postgraduate students with the latest tools, techniques, and digital advances implemented in the construction industry that enable them to become technologically adept and industry-ready.

With the rapid advent of artificial intelligence and digital technologies, the construction industry world-wide is undergoing a major transformation in its processes and systems. The school and university have well in advance identified this shift and has taken proactive steps. These initiatives ensure that the students gain exposure to these modern tools, techniques that simplify processes, boost productivity, and help manoeuvre complex construction challenges. Historically, the construction industry is blemished with quality deficiencies along with time and cost overruns. With the seamless adoption of technology and systems, it is not far away that we will be in a position to build safe, resilient infrastructure that will perform reliably for its lifetime and address the triple constraints of time, cost and quality. This therefore, requires the integration of technology through the entire lifecycle of a project, from formulation, conceptualisation to closure, which means adaption in planning, monitoring, estimating, procurement, execution and verification of the project deliverables at every stage.

Academics however, has its own limitations with respect to credits and engagement time. To address the constraints and still be at the forefront, the school has adopted an alternative approach of integrating technologies through guest sessions and expert lectures delivered by renowned construction professionals. These sessions allow students to learn directly from experts who are actively implementing cutting-edge technologies in real-world projects. Over the past one year, the focus in the school has been to expose students to the several emerging tools and some of these include the adoption of AI in construction planning and scheduling, AI in project management information systems (PMIS) and the application of AI tools in construction safety and quality management. The curriculum has also incorporated advances like AR/VR, permitting students to experience engaging and collaborative learning environment. These technologies allow students to visualize complex concepts and thereby improve the retention capabilities and strengthen their basics through experiential learning. In addition, this year, the postgraduate students of the school also enrolled for a certificate-based training program in the field of Building Information Modelling (BIM). A noteworthy initiative was the As-Built Model – Scan-to-BIM workshop, which provided hands-on training in advanced data acquisition using precision laser scanners, processing and registration of 3D point clouds, and the development of parametric BIM models with highest level of accuracy. Students were also offered hands-on training in drone technology. This included practical training in drone operations, aerial data capture and interpretation of datasets for construction monitoring and analysis. These initiatives are not mere drivers of teaching learning process but steps towards fostering entrepreneurial paths in future.

Through these initiatives, the school of construction continues to foster a dynamic and technology-driven learning environment. By integrating emerging tools with experiential learning opportunities, the school ensures that students not only develop strong technical capabilities but also gain the confidence and skills required to contribute effectively to the evolving construction industry.
